Is a Labrador Retriever a good choice for me?

Big Dog | October 28th, 2010

If you would like to have a dog that is sweet, outgoing and friendly, then the Labrador Retriever is the best one for you. These dogs are devoted and thrive on human companionship. They can become good watchdogs as they are usually reserved and suspicious with strangers. The Labrador Retriever is fond of children and also like other dogs and pets in the family. As they love attention and their family they can become bored and destructive if left alone for a longer period of time.

Labrador Retrievers have a dense, short and hard double coat that requires at least weekly care as this breed is an average shedder. These dogs are usually healthy, but sadly they are prone to health issues like hip dysplasia, eye disorders or elbow dysplasia.

Training of this breed is very easy as they are clever and willing to learn new things. However, they never respond well to harsh training methods, so consistency, fairness and many rewards are needed. Labrador Retrievers excel in police work, tracking, agility and rescue or can be good service dogs as well.

All in all this breed is one of the best for families with children and other pets who want to have a loyal, friendly and devoted friend that is also clever and is willing to learn and amuse the family. They require daily walks and at least half an hour play to keep them happy.

I hope this few sentences will help everyone decide whether the Labrador Retriever is the best breed for you and your family.

What is the difference between an English and an American Labrador?

Big Dog | July 22nd, 2010

Well, the most obvious difference is that English Labradors are from English stocks, and the American ones are from stocks in the US. Furthermore, the English Labradors can be called ‘Field bred’ Labs, and the American ones ‘Show bred’. This means that, generally speaking, the labs you see running in the field are most probably English, and the ones in shows are usually Americans. Due to this, there are some little differences in the appearance too: English labs have a heavier, thicker, and have a stronger body, while the American ones are more tall and lanky.

Difference between English and American Labrador Retriever

An English Labrador Retriever and an American Labrador Retrievers are sub types of the Labrador Retriever.  Both types have the same general breed characteristics but have some slight variations in looks and temperament. The English Labrador is slightly smaller in size than the American Labrador and has a more compact, thickset, stocky body with a square muzzle.  The English Labradors are often called “blockheads” to refer to their head structure.  The American Labrador Retriever, on the other hand, is taller, has a narrower body and a longer muzzle.

The coat of the English Lab is thick and dense while the coat of the American Lab is thin and coarse.  The English Lab has a calmer temperament than the American Lab that tends to have a higher energy level.  The differences between the English Lab and American Lab have developed primarily because of breeding preferences in each of the corresponding countries.  Disregarding the regional type (whether English or American), Labrador Retrievers make excellent companions, who are very devoted, loyal and are great with kids.

I have to tell you, my ultimate favourite Lab color is the chocolate brown color. I have a neighbor, who regulalry walks her chocolate Lab in my street, and at times like that I am almost green with envy; I so want one for myself as well!Did you know that brown labs were culled in the late 19th century, because only the black and yellow ones were acceptable according to the breed standard? Chocolate ones and the even rarer silver-colored puppies were culled. Tragedy!!! I call that canine racism!!

Labradors Make The Best Seeing-Eye Dogs…

D Dog Fan | February 12th, 2008

How come we are not surprised by that? For visually-impaired or blind people, labrador Retrievers offer help, guidance and a pair of eyes to help them pass obstacles and people in their path. So why are Labs so popular as seeing-eye dogs? Well, they make great guide dogs, due to their stable characters and high intelligence. Labradors don?t panic under stressful situations, but rather they calmly respond to all challenges and obstacles. Many a blind person has found comfort and solace in the companionship of a Labrador Retriever.
