marley&me

The most famous appearance of this dog breed was in the film Marley and Me. This dramedy (comedy/drama) and still true family film was released in 2008 and is based on the memoir of a dog written by John Grogan.

The plot is about a newly-wed couple (Jennifer Aniston /Jennifer/ and Owen Wilson /John/) who is thinking about having a baby, but first decide to stall Jennifer’s biological clock by adopting a dog to see if they are really ready for a family. We can follow the life of Marley, the dog, through loads of happy moments and problems in the family for 14 years, when finally Marley’s life comes to an end.

In this story we can see what kind of dogs Labrador Retirevers are: they are loving, playful, compassionate and very active, especially in their first few years.

Difference between English and American Labrador Retriever

Ann | October 23rd, 2009

An English Labrador Retriever and an American Labrador Retrievers are sub types of the Labrador Retriever.  Both types have the same general breed characteristics but have some slight variations in looks and temperament. The English Labrador is slightly smaller in size than the American Labrador and has a more compact, thickset, stocky body with a square muzzle.  The English Labradors are often called “blockheads” to refer to their head structure.  The American Labrador Retriever, on the other hand, is taller, has a narrower body and a longer muzzle.

The coat of the English Lab is thick and dense while the coat of the American Lab is thin and coarse.  The English Lab has a calmer temperament than the American Lab that tends to have a higher energy level.  The differences between the English Lab and American Lab have developed primarily because of breeding preferences in each of the corresponding countries.  Disregarding the regional type (whether English or American), Labrador Retrievers make excellent companions, who are very devoted, loyal and are great with kids.

Sleepy Secrets – You May Not Know About Your Dog’s Snoozing Habits

Big Dog | May 5th, 2009

It’s a little known fact that dogs spend more than half their life sleeping. The average dog spends 13 hours a day napping. So it is useful to know what their various sleeping habits mean.

The way that a dog circles before it goes to sleep is believed to be linked to a habit inherited from its ancient ancestor the wolf. In the wild, wolves trample down vegetation and long grass in order to make a bed for themselves. Its wolf ancestry also explains why the dog wakes up so easily when there is activity and can be snappy if woken up suddenly. The ancient wolf deep inside the dog sees this as a perceived threat and defends itself accordingly. No wonder they say let sleeping dogs lie.

As you’ll probably know, dogs will sleep in different places and in different positions.
The way a dog sleeps also varies according to temperature. Dogs will tend to curl up into a tight ball when it is cold in order to conserve body heat. You can also tell when a dog is dreaming or experiencing Rapid Eye Movement sleep. Its eyelids and whiskers may twitch.

Labrador Retriever through the years...

The Myterious Silver Labrador…

D Dog Fan | January 15th, 2008

The Labrador Retriever coat colors are black, yellow and chocolate. Any other color or a combination of colors is seen as a disqualification by the AKC. Lately a rather unusual color has been seen in Labradors. What is this mysterious silver color in Labs? Silver does not feature as a permissible color in the Lab standard. The Silver Labrador adds a new and beautiful color to the most popular dog breed in the United States. As with most new and different situations or color, condemnation of the Silver Labrador exists. The Silver Labrador also has it’s share of naysayers and receives a lot of condemnation from people who are serious about the breed and breeding.

Some believe that you can get a beautiful, new unique color to the coat of the Silver Labrador, but you do not lose nor change the personality and characteristics of an animal that is the most sought after, loved family and hunting dog in America. Other views believe that the Silver is “rare”, only in that there are few dogs with that color. There is a reason reputable breeders do not sell them — It is not a proper Labrador color. Just like brindle colored Labs and Black and tan happen, and are seldom produced. Any breeder who breeds more than a couple of litters will, in time, produce a mismark, which the silver lab is believed to be. There is nothing wrong with it, and they’re just bought as pets. The AKC determined that Silver Labradors are “dilute chocolates” chocolates and still cannot feature in shows. The term dilute has a genetic basis, like with the color of a Weinmaraner.

Whatever your views about the unusual or unaccepted or even rare silver color for a lab, their popularity is very much rising!Only time will tell if it will be ever accepted as a colour for the breed standard….
